When the clock feels normal

Write your own, marked afterwards.

Typing speed only gets you to the end of the answer. What the answer says when you get there is the part that is marked.

Questions about the game

How is words per minute counted?

Net words a minute: correct characters divided by five, over the time you spent typing. In Two answers, one clock, the reading time before your first keystroke comes out first, so the number is a typing speed rather than time on the page. One answer needs no subtraction: its clock starts on your first keystroke. A word counts only once it matches the target exactly, so a typo you fix costs you time rather than credit.

Where does the pace of 54 come from?

Two 80-word answers inside 3:30, with 30 seconds to plan, is 160 words in three minutes: 53.3 words a minute, rounded up to 54, which leaves a little over 30 seconds. A comfortable target, not a requirement. Many strong answers are shorter than 80 words.

What is the short-answer mark part way through an answer?

The sentence where the model names its tension. By then it has taken a position and given the speaker's own line in quotes, and Casper publishes no minimum length, so every model carries a mark there. Across this corpus those marks fall between 47 and 59 words. Reaching one inside the clock earns its own result line and some XP, less than finishing the whole model pays, and it never sets a time record. The marks sit well under the pace: two answers of about 60 words (counted as the pace counts them, five characters to a word) fit the 3.5 minutes at 40 words a minute rather than 54. The rest of the model is the stretch.

Does this measure how fast I would answer on the day?

No. It measures copying. The answer is already written in front of you here, and on the day you have to compose one, which runs slower for everyone. Treat the pace on this page as a floor rather than a prediction: a speed you cannot reach while copying is not one you will reach while thinking.

What counts as a personal best?

A round at 92 percent accuracy or better. A Sprint or Keep going speed best also needs twenty landed words, so a few words in the first seconds cannot set a record. The twenty-word gate is on the speed only; a score best does not carry it. The two time records have a floor of their own: a fastest answer needs twenty seconds of typing and a time in the bank needs forty, so a round that ended in a blink cannot claim either. Rounds played on a phone earn XP but never set a speed record, because a touch keyboard is a different instrument.
